In cooperation with Tanzfabrik Berlin and Archiv Darstellende Kunst of the Akademie der Künste Berlin, since 2017 a team of MCB/ITI staff members has been working together with students and teachers of dance studies at the FU Berlin to digitalize audiovisual documents from the first 10 years of the Tanzfabrik, coordinated by the German Centre of ITI / mime centrum berlin (ITI/MCB).
The history of the foundation, development and impact of the "Tanzfabrik Berlin", founded in 1978 in the West part of Berlin and still active in artistic and pedagogical fields, represents one of the most extraordinary phenomena of recent artistic, urban and social development in Berlin. In this context, the interfaces between German expressive dance and modern dance as two sources of the origin of the Tanzfabrik are little known and have hardly been researched at all. This also applies to the question of the influence that Tanzfabrik Berlin had on the development of modern dance and modern dance education in Berlin in the 1970s and in Germany as a whole. The indexing, digititalsation and publication of audiovisual documents (videos) of the early Tanzfabrik Berlin could provide a new, far-reaching impulse in this regard.
The aim of the project - funded by digiS, the digitalisation programme of the state of Berlin - is to identify, analyse and open up video documents from the early years of Tanzfabrik Berlin and to present them online, enriched by contextual material. For the first time, the early works will be available free of charge online and nationwide for dance enthusiasts and researchers.
